Contrary to Nature

For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. – Romans 1:26–27

What are we to think of a passage like Romans 1:26-27? The Bible defines homosexual desires as “contrary to nature,” not an equal alternative orientation. Homosexuality is a “dishonorable passion” that “consumes” men and women, leading to shameless behavior. The strong emotional pull of lust and the affections shared between persons in a homosexual relationship – whatever those affections may be called – cannot properly be called “love.” After all, love “does not rejoice at wrongdoing” (1 Cor. 13:6) and homosexuality is wrongdoing (Lust and Chastity, Tabletalk, May 2008, p. 10-11).

  1. If homosexuality is “contrary to nature” (and it is) then clearly, homosexuals were not “born that way”, because “nature” does not produce such things.

Therefore, homosexuality is not innate or genetic, but rather, it is a result of conditioning and choice – something for which there is a remedy and for which there is the possibility of repentance and change.

This gives hope to the homosexual – he is not locked into his sin by birth, and therefore has the possibility of overcoming it and being delivered from it through the mercy and power of Jesus Christ.

  2. We need to be specific on what choices people made which resulted in homosexual practices. A pastor once said that, “people say that aids is a judgment from God due to their homosexual practices. But I say, no! Sure aids is a consequence of sins, but rather homosexuality is the judgment, for ignoring the Living God.” And he was right, for as Romans 1:20-27 states:

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Note the bold words. Because, wherefore, for this cause … the actions of ignoring the Almighty God resulted in God “giving them over to their sinful desires”. The only thing that holds us back from groveling in our sins which will lead us to our own destruction, is God.

So it’s not so much that they made a choice for homosexual practices that led them to a destructive path. No, the choice was the choice to ignore the Almighty God. They willfully ignored the signs of the heavens declaring His Glory, so God in His good judgment gave them over to their sinful desires. He let them loose like wild dogs, giving them over to a depraved mind.
