Harold Camping Doomsday Prophecy May 21, 2011

In Reformed Baptist Fellowship on May 19, 2011 at 1:26 pm

Family Radio’s (http://www.familyradio.com/facts/) official description of Camping’s claim:

What will take place on May 21?

On May 21, 2011 two events will occur. These events could not be more opposite in nature, the one more wonderful than can be imagined; the other more horrific than can be imagined.

A great earthquake will occur the Bible describes it as “such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.” This earthquake will be so powerful it will throw open all graves. The remains of the all the believers who have ever lived will be instantly transformed into glorified spiritual bodies to be forever with God.

On the other hand the bodies of all unsaved people will be thrown out upon the ground to be shamed.

The inhabitants who survive this terrible earthquake will exist in a world of horror and chaos beyond description. Each day people will die until October 21, 2011 when God will completely destroy this earth and its surviving inhabitants.

Critique Summary:

1. We cannot know the day or the hour.

Matthew 24:36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.”

Matthew 25:13 “Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour.”

2. We must be ready every day and hour.

We should live every day as if it were the day we will be ushered before God in Judgment.  Why should May 21 be a more urgent day than May 18?  We should stand “on tiptoe” every hour of every day looking forward to our meeting with our Lord and Savior face to face.  Every day is a day for crying mightily to God for mercy.

Jonathan Edwards’ Resolution#7: “Resolved, never to do anything that I should be afraid to do if it were the last hour of my life.”

Matthew Henry on Matt 24:42: “We must watch for our Lord’s coming, to us in particular at our death, after which is the judgment, that is the great day with us, the end of our time; and his coming at the end of all time to judge the world, the great daywith all mankind.”

Proverbs 27:1 “Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.”

Luke 12:20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’

2 Peter 3:11 “Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, on account of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!”

3. We can see how the Deceiver cultivates cynicism and disillusionment.

This twisted crying of ”Wolf” (Camping: “The Bible guarantees it.”), invites men to scoff at the scriptures.

2 Peter 2:1-2 “But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.  And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.”

  2. Pastor Mark – Thanks for the reminder that our day of judgment will be the day we die. For approximately 150,000 people on this earth, May 21 WILL be judgment day – because about that many people die every day on this earth, every day of the year.

Yes, our blessed Lord will return in power and glory one day to this earth to bring about the end of this age and the end of this world. That will happen in God’s time, and no man knows the day or the hour.

But for all of us, it is but a few years until we die – and the real question is – are we ready for that day, by having repented of our sins and believing in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior from sin? If so, then we are also ready for the world wide return of Christ, whenever that might be.

  3. We need to remember that Jesus will return and to always be looking for His return. How easy it is to become complacent in daily living that we do forget. One thing that has come out of this prediction of Harold Camping is that it does remind us to think about it more often. This was a good response to remind us also about false teachers and to guard ourselves with the truth.

  4. Annette, amen! A co-worker said something challenging: We all know Harold Camping is a false teacher, but if Christ returned this week, or even Sat., would we be disappointed? I saw a Facebook group called “Christians against the Second Coming on May 21st” and that just seems wrong. I know what they mean, and that’s probably not when He would return anyway (too many people expecting it, plus it doesn’t appear the Gospel’s gone to all nations yet).

At any rate, I would hate to be Camping on Judgment Day- “what you have done to the least of these My brethren, you have also done to Me”

  5. On the gospel going to all the world, I just noted that’s in the Olivet Discourse 😉 The partial preterist and the optimistic amil in my head are duking it out right now, lol. Normally they get along just fine…

    Col. 1
3 We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; 5 because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, 6 which has come to you, AS IT HAS ALSO IN ALL THE WORLD, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth

I’ll just say, Maranatha, and leave it at that!

  6. And Revelation talks about every tongue, tribe, and nation! So Jeus will have the victory.

  7. er JESUS will have the victory

  8. You are so right! no one knows when the end of the world is coming. Why do people insist on the way of mankind and not God’s way. It is really sad.

  10. I just got done listening to Open Forum from 5/18/11. That was the last archived recording from Harold Camping’s radio show. I never actually sat and listened to his views on May 21st in HIS WORDS. I then read the link in this article from his website… This man is deluded… he needs to repent for his errors and the pain and confusion he has caused so many people with his errors… sadly, he has just moved the date back to October 21 instead… But, one thing Mr. Camping has done, is he has stirred up the issue amongst many of my friends and allowed me to share the good news of Christ and his return with them. Does that make up for what he has done?? not at all…

  11. Harold Camping’s was not fullfilled, so it is a false prophecy
