Awaiting the City of God

In Reformed Baptist Fellowship on September 14, 2012 at 9:30 am

Evangelical Christians love America. Some see in her the last hope of creating a Christian nation. But it is not a Christian nation. It is pagan to the core. It is in danger of becoming, if it is not already, the new “Evil Empire.” The Mayflower Compact is a museum piece, a relic of a forgotten era. “In God We Trust” is now a lie.

Yes, we must always work for social reform. Yes, we must be “profane’ in Martin Luther’s sense of going out of the temple and into the world. We do not despise the country of our birth. But in what do we invest our hope? The state is not God. The nation is not the Promised Land. The president is not our King. The Congress is not our Savior. Our welfare can never be found in the city of man. The federal government is not sovereign. We live—in every age and in every generation—by the rivers of Babylon. We need to understand that clearly. We must learn how to sing the Lord’s song in a strange and foreign land.

America will fall. The United States will inevitably disintegrate. The Stars and Stripes will bleed. The White House will turn to rubble. That is certain. We stand like Augustine before the sea. We pray that God will spare our nation. If He chooses not to, we ask for the grace to accept its demise. In either case, we look to Him who is our King and to heaven, which is our home. We await the city of God, the heavenly Jerusalem, whose builder and maker is God.

  1. This is something all of us should keep in mind as we approach November. Yes, it is important that we vote, and we should vote for the one who will likely allow for the free worship of our Lord and King, but our Lord and King is not the president. Our Lord and King is the Almighty and Sovereign God, Who exalts nations, and crumbles nations according to His will and purpose! This is our Ruler! And we are subjects of His and citizens of Mount Zion! Nothing can thwart the purposes and plan of our King!

  2. I really needed to read this post as I often get discouraged when it comes to our country’s well being . “But it is not a Christian nation. It is pagan to the core. It is in danger of becoming, if it is not already, the new “Evil Empire.” This is a hard saying but absolutely true. The god America trust in is not the God of the Bible.

  3. Tyrese, that is sadly so very true. I listened to a sermon preached by Alistair Begg today, & he made mention that America boasts of some 33,000,000 born again Christians. Just think of the difference 33,000,000 REAL Christians would make in our nation! However, we should always remember – ” We await the City of God, the heavenly Jerusalem, whose builder and maker is God.” There, righteousness shall reign, & sin will plague us no more, for our King shall rule & reign forever!

  4. a friend of mine recently told me ,that there would be no genuine revival in this country until there was a genuine reverence of the lords day, and i would add a genuine fear of GOD,which many churches lack. there is a looseness in worship and the additions of men are becoming more popular ,.dont be alarmed if the inside of places of the worship of GOD are looking more world friendly.the sharp sword of scripture is being replaced with the versions that blunt the edge.do modern day grace preacher really believe in the total impotency of our fallen nature.

  5. Ric, you are so right! There are so many “world friendly churches” today, & they are usually the ones that have large crowds (the broad way), while those who come to worship & reverence the Lord of glory experience small numbers (the narrow way). True, biblical revival will only come to our nation when we experience true, biblical repentance. Then we will become more concerned with God’s glory in our worship instead of, for example, going to a “christianized” rock concert that glorifies our sensual, sinful nature.
The last time I made a similar comment like this, I was bombarded with criticism, but that’s okay. We are called to speak the truth in love & leave the results to the Lord.

  6. the subject of christianized rock is something i have had to contend with.It should go without saying as it once did . even the old missionary baptist would not allow such things and were vocal about it.It is these modern theologians who have corrupted a lot of things coming from liberal seminaries and i do mean among presbyterians. It is the portrayal of Christ which has caused a lot of confusion. when i hear Jesus is cool or such terms used for the I AM of the bible it really sickens me and this is the future of the visible church.i have a thirteen year old so i have to read from an accurate translation of scripture so he will get the true expression of GOD speaking. people get tired of harping on the king james ,but look at the state of the church. And this is a foundational issue. no apologies

  7. It is always encouraging when I find one more who stands boldly for the “old paths!” God bless you, Ric! You are in my prayers, brother.
